Welcome from our Careers advisor Katy Osborne
As a Level 6 qualified careers advisor, located in the 6th form, I have the opportunity to get to know the students and offer bespoke tailored careers support. Across their two year journey I am able to deliver content during assemblies and enrichment which covers topics such as; Post 18 options, CV tips, interview techniques, personal branding and personal statements. We also arrange for employers and alumni to visit and share their inspirational stories. A few of our alumni also choose to come back and support our yearly careers fair open to all 6th formers with up to 40 local employers attending.
Students can book a 1;1 careers guidance session during a study period to discuss their thoughts and ideas and are able to attend an after school club to support with CV and apprenticeship applications. With Dr Talbot processing all University applications we work together to support all students regardless of their choices whether that be progressing straight into work an apprenticeship, HTQ or University ensuring they have all the support they need at the right time for them.
We encourage Year 12 students to undertake Work Experience while they are with us. Work experience is essential for sixth-form students for several reasons, as it provides valuable real-world learning and skill-building opportunities that go beyond the classroom.
Getting used to professional environments helps sixth-formers become more confident in their ability to work independently and take responsibility, helping them develop a more mature approach to tasks and people.
When applying to universities or jobs, relevant experience can make students stand out. It shows dedication, initiative, and a proactive attitude—all of which appeal to admissions teams and employers.
Students are allowed up to 2-weeks on placement, through the Academic Year - avoiding June to allow them to concentrate on their Completion exams. We have a wealth of contacts to facilitate placements, but student’s are also more than welcome to arrange them. We ask for paperwork to be filed 3-weeks prior to commencement.
