At the very end of last term the Thomas Gainsborough Debate Society were proud to host a US Presidential style debate and an electoral vote.
Kyle De La Cruz shares his report of the event -
"Firstly, thank you all for coming! We had a turnout of 166 people - the highest ever so far! Secondly, a MASSIVE congratulations and thank you to our two debaters, Matthew Fairburn and Betsy Devereux, and to our host, Zarar Rahman. Also, a massive thank you to everyone who helped organise this debate, to name a few Joe Ward, Rayan Shahid, Harry Barron, Betsy Devereux, and Mackenzie Gregory, and a thank you to Mr Smith, and Mr Yates for their support.
Now, to the most important matter - the result.
132 ballots were cast (109 paper, 23 online). The result has been verified by an independent person. We are using the First Past The Post (FPTP) electoral system, slightly different to the American system of the electoral college.
The results are as follows:
Donald J. Trump / James D. Vance - 55
Kamala D. Harris / Timothy J. Walz - 76
Spoilt ballots - 1
Therefore, it gives me great pleasure to announce that the winner of the TGS Debate Society 2024 Presidental Debate is Kamala Harris!
Photos from the debate will be appearing on our Instagram soon! https://www.instagram.com/tgsdebatesociety/profilecard
After half term, we would urge anyone who feels passionate about sharing their views to join the TGS Debate Society - please email 25kdelacruz@tgschool.net if you are interested.
Thank you all once again for taking part, and a massive congratulations to those who debated.
Enjoy your half term, and God bless the United States of America,"
