Dear Families,

Year 9 Information for Triple Science in Year 10

I am writing to inform you of how we prepare our Year 9s for when they begin their GCSE studies in September. As a school we value the sciences and choose to provide students with the best opportunity for success in triple and double award.

To provide more curriculum time for the extra content that the three separate Triple Sciences contain, some students will be invited in the spring to study Triple Science in year 10 and 11.  This also gives more time to enrich and embed students' knowledge of the three Sciences. There are 4 option choices for students, and there is also guidance towards history, geography or RPE, and for the majority a language.

Triple Science requires students to be engaged and motivated to succeed. It also relies on students working hard and independently on revision to reach their potential.

To assist us in our decision as to who should be given the option to study Triple Science we have been assessing and monitoring students throughout the Autumn term. We will also take into account the students previous academic record alongside their classwork and commitment to Science. There will be an assessment in the Spring term based on the Key Stage 3 knowledge that they have received this year and in Year 7 and 8. The aim will be to report the outcome of these decisions before the Year 9 option evening in February, so that students know what options are available to them.

The assessment will be in the sports hall on Monday 20th January 2025 during period 3.

We are actively encouraging students to continue their studies of Science at A Level and they will be able access the courses with either a grade of 6,6 in Combined Science or a 6 in the individual Science in the Triple Sciences. I want to be clear that either pathway can still lead to Science A Levels if this is something your child would like to do.

Topic and revision material will be posted on Go4Schools to support students' preparation for this test. This will be part of students’ usual homework with some additional optional activities.

If you or your child have any questions, please talk to their Science teacher in the first instance.
