Research Study - Emotionally-Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
We have been contacted by Liv Dawson, a final-year student at Durham University. She is conducting research as part of their dissertation and has asked us to share this with you.
The study looks at how parents and caregivers cope with the challenges of supporting children who struggle to attend school due to anxiety or other emotional difficulties (commonly referred to as Emotionally-Based School Avoidance or EBSA). I aim to understand how caregiver stress and resilience shape their experiences, with the hope of improving support for families in the future.
They are recruiting families of young people aged 11-18 who experience these challenges. Taking part would involve a short online questionnaire (around 20 minutes) and an optional brief follow-up interview.

Careers
All Year 10 students should by now have submitted a CV and Cover letter to the Year 11 Google Careers Classroom which they have worked on during IT lessons in Year 9 and on an enrichment day in Year 10. Could you please ask your young person whether they have submitted both pieces of work and that they have checked the classroom to see whether they need to make amendments to either document before they have their mock interview next term.
Congratulations to a Year 13 student who has recently secured a Saturday job from an advert mum found in the careers newsletter , one of the many reasons to glance through the padlet each week. We have a guest speaker Dr Jordan Lazell visiting on Monday to discuss marketing, leadership and entrepreneurship , students can sign up via their tutor during registration.
Online Safety Newsletter - December 2024
A particularly pertinent online safety newsletter this month, as Christmas may bring plenty of new technology for many households.
Please find details of keeping your children safe across a range of gaming devices, including XBoxes, Playstations, Nintendo Switches and tablets, as well as how to ensure your child is playing age-relevant games. It also includes updated information about keeping your child safe whilst using Roblox, a platform we know is popular with our students, which contains facilities to engage in virtual chat rooms.
